Early Christmas Shopping Christmas shopping has begun in Whakatane. Shopkeepers report an unusually early and large demand for “lay-bys.” Christmas cards are already being purchased.

Mothers’ Contest On Saturday, Sister Annie opened the Annual Competition Day between the Te Teko- Kawerau and Waiohou branches of the League of Mothers held at Te Teko. A crowd of well over 100 was present, and the judges, Mesdames Metcalfe, Hamill and Fergusson of Whakatane L.0.M., had a busy time judging the many high class entries. Members of the Te Teko branch won the Silver Rose Bowl for the most points for the day in all classes, included in which were, cooking, knitting, fancywork, Maori craft, plain sewing, thrift, crochet and flowers. There was also a large number of entries in the baby show which was judged by Sister Neilsen, of Whakatane.
