BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 1, 1950 REFRESHING, BUT?
While it is refreshing for us to receive from the General Secretary of Federated Farmers of New Zealand a letter commending our interest in trying to see farmers’ interests in this district reconciled, that letter contained no. suggestion that Federated Farmers’ headquarters intended to do anything about it.
The suggestion is made that, because Waikato, in which a similar set-up existed, was able to achieve unification, Bay of Plenty should be able to do the same but there is no indication that Waikato was helped from Wellington. Probably every member of both Bay organisations recognises the need for unity but, without a postive lead from someone, how will that he achieved? And what better source of inspiration could there be than Dominion headquarters?
Federated Farmers in a district like this, should be a powerful, influential body, doing immense good for the district but it cannot achieve real results while it is split in two. It is up to Wellington to cease tolerating an almost tolerable situation and do something positive to achieve reconciliation.
