CONGRATULATIONS, MR SHAPLEY

Sir, —The people of this Borough should be grateful to Mr Shapley for standing for the position of Mayor. Strange as it may seem there are men in this town round about 46 years of age, ‘and this is the first occasion on which they have had the privilege of voting in a Mayoral, election.

Yours etc., “FIRST TIMER.” 'Whakatane, October 30, 1950.

Sir, —Congratulations to Sidney Shapley Esquire for offering his services to the people of Whakatane. For some years Mr Shapley was deputy-Mayor and in that position he deputised many times for the Mayor. Citizens will remember that he carried out this duty in an unspoiled manner and with a simple dignity that gave the impression of a man who occupied the position to serve the people. One could never have imagined him taking pleasure in forcing children to do homework by candle light or telling residents that 10.30 p.m. was the proper hour for them to scurry to bed. Yours etc.. “WIDE AWAKE.” Whakatane, October 30, 1950.
