Camera Club Studies Prints
The third general meeting of the Whakatane District Camera Club was held on Monday and, after business was concluded, a print competition took place. Fifteen prints were submitted, most being contact size. The technical quality of all was excellent while many were fine pictorially. Winners were chosen by popular Vote, with Mr L. Richardson and Mr W. Kirk tying for first. Prints by Mrs Matthews, Mr Barwell and Mr J. Carter received equal votes for second place. Mi' B. Cottrell then offered constructive criticism from a pictorial viewpoint, giving practical hints on how to improve a photograph by careful composition, correct trimming and masking etc. Mr J. Carter went on to discuss the quality of the entries, pointing out the need of good definition which was not lacking in this case. A brief but illuminating talk by Mr W. Kirk on photographic copyright as applied throughout the British Empire followed the competition, questions were invited and a discussion was held to clarify obscure points. It was decided that the next practical meeting on Monday, November 6, will be devoted to print making and enlarging; an endeavour is to be made to enable all members to try their -hand at this fascinating branch of photography.
The print competition at the following general meeting on November 20 will be a child study, when a good selection should be submitted and give the judges some thinking to pick out the winners.
