Rowing Club Season Opens Successfully

Any success the senior crew of the Tauranga Club might have at the rowing section of the Canterbury Centennial Games next year would give pleasure to the whole of the Bay of Plenty declared the president, Mr H. G. Cutler, at the official opening of the season of the Whakatane Rowing Club on Saturday. He wished the crew all success and best wishes from Whakatane.

Trial four races with mixed crews of the Whakatane Club and the visiting Tauranga Club were held during the day and there were several close finishes. The final provided a feature unique in the history of the club when two crews, one stroked by P. Bowering and the other by L. O. Stewart, raced twice and each time the judge declared a dead heat. Instead of racing the third time the trophies were divided up among the two crews.

A fair crowd watched the races during the day but a sharp breeze made conditions uncomfortable. The weather was dull and the water rather choppy. Results will be published on Wednesday.

District Ciubs Should Do Well That the two Bay of Plenty clubs Whakatane and Tauranga, will do well at northern regattas this season is the opinion of the Whakatane coach and former coach of the Tauranga Club, Mr C. D. Molesworth, after he had seen mixed crews racing at the opening of the Whakatane Rowing Club’s season on Saturday. He said there appeared to be good talent about but he urged that both clubs should make an effort to build up the membership among the younger members. 4 Last year Mr Molesworth coached four of the Whakatane crews that won Auckland Provincial championships and he hopes to be able to defend the titles this year. Before he came to Whakatane Mr Molesworth lived at- Tauranga and assisted the club there in gaining provincial honours.
