BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1950 A GOOD IDEA
There is merit in the suggestion made by the Whakatane Citizens’ Association that Borough Council candidates should be heard at a public meeting.
Not all candidates are known to all electors. Nor are their views. From a certain quarter, the present Council has been consistently criticised. Those members who seek re-election could, at a public meeting, explain the actions of the Council and answer questions. New candidates could make themselves known to the public and put forward their views on matters that are the subject of controversy. Any such meeting would, however, need to be well chaired if it were not to deteriorate into a muddle of criticism and, perhaps, bitterness. Each candidate could be given a set time for speaking and answering questions and questioners would need to be prevented from making speeches themselves. If candidates and public were sufficientlv interested for such a meeting to be held, the air could, perhaps, be cleared of some of the uncertainty which now prevails.
