MINISTER HAS NEW PLAN FOR MURUPARA
The Government intends to proceed with a plan for the establishment of a paper and pulp mill at Murupara. A revised plan for this huge undertaking was drawn up by the State Forest Service and presented to the Minister of Forests, Mr E. B. Corbett, about a week ago. The plan was discussed by the Cabinet earlier this week and the Prime Minister, Mr Holland, has since had a meeting with representatives of large private forestry interests. An announcement of the details of the plan will be made by Mr Corbett in the comparatively near future. The original plan for the Murupara scheme envisaged an expenditure of £14,000,000 on a mill and other plant and a further £10,000,000 for roads, railways and the opening of a new outlet port, probably at Mount Maunganui. While definite in its decision to operate Murupara, the Government is understood to be considering the present plan which provides merely for early development.
