No Change Likely In Set-Up For State Houses
Because of the reluctance of other bodies in the district to co-operate it is not likely that a proposal of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Homeservicemen’s Association to establish a State house allocation committee at Whakatane will be proceeded with. This was revealed at a meeting of the executive of the Association.
The association’s plan was to form a committee to consider all applications on their individual urgency, whether they were civilians or exservicemen, Several organisations expressed their sympathy with the scheme but declined to interfere with the present set-up. One letter from the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce stated that although it was sympathetic with the proposals, it would not interfere with the present 50 per cent priority enjoyed by returned servicemen.
The secretary, Mr H. D. London, stated that the proposal was for a combined allocation committee, as it was felt that the cases of greatest hardship on either side would thus be brought to notice.
