P. & T. Fail In Friendly Cricket

In a friendly cricket match .at

Te Puke on Saturday P. and T. fail- ' ed badly and were defeated by 44 runs on the first innings. Te Puke made 78 (Hook 13, Crowley 15, Alien 17) and 35 for 3 declared (P. Smith 21 not out). Bowling for P. and T. E. Malaquin 4 for 10 off 11 overs, J. Rivett 2. for 14, R. Cleland 2 .for 17) and, in Te Puke’s second innings K. Burt 3 for 11.

P. and T.’s first innings score of 34 produced no double figure score by any player but continued the stay of dominant bowling over first of season batting (Hook 2 for 6, Masters 2 for 8, P. Smith 4 for 9 and Ball 2 for 3. In Te Puke’s, second knock, 1,5-

year-old Peter Smith of High School scored a, neat 21 not out and this added to his four wickets for nine runs shows much promise ( of a bright future. P. and T.’s second innings produced 59 runs for six wickets, several players retiring (E. Malaquin 19, R. Cleland 12, W. R. Whiteside 11). This was E. Malaquin’s last match for the P. and T. Club prior to his departure for the South Island and his bowling on this occasion was of a high order. His loss to P. and T. is<*§i serious one, but on the turf wickets in Canterbury this popular Whakatane player should do very well. Last season he took 43 wickets for an average of 6.7.
