Scrub Fire

A scrub fire in Landing Road caused the calling out of the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade on Wednesday evening.

At Board Meeting Mesdames R. Caverhill and D. E. Sumner and Messrs J. Mullins (chairman), J. P. Caulfield, A. F. McGougan and C. A. Suckling were present at the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board meeting in Whakatane yesterday.

Water Melon Patch Frontiersman E. R. Hunt, of Whakatane, has made available, and cultivated a plot on his farm, for a water melon patch. Local Frontiersmen plan to have a “working bee” next Sunday, to plant the beds, and hope to have a good crop for supplying their stall next year. Cricket Team A cricket team will be picked from the following to play Kaingaroa at Edgecumbe: K. A. Tunnicliffe, E. W. Tunniclilfe, L. Thurlow, T. Brown, A. Elliott, A. Magee, E. Tenk, R. Hill, D. Stace, D. Cornwall, A. Laurie, S. Savage, T. Blake, Southcombe.

P. & T. Cricket Team

The P. and T. cricket team to play a friendly game with Te Puke at Te Puke is: J. B. Rivett, R. Cleland, K. Burt, F. Martin, A. Munro, E. Malaquin, B. McGougan, D. Howat, R. Jones, J. Fitzsimmons, B. Whiteside.

Hospital Statistics There were 12 major and 55 minor operations at the Whakatane hospital in September, reported the medical superintendent, Dr E. T. Dawson, to the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board yesterday. There were 170 admissions and 159 discharges, leaving 93 patients in hospital at the erid of the month. There were six deaths and 43 births.

Druids’ 500 Mrs O. Bridger cut with Mrs J. Chapman to win the ladies’ prize at the Whakatane Druids’ 500 card evening held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, and Mr J. Hanright won the men’s prize. The booby prizes went to Mrs F. Worrell and Mr Williams. Mrs M. Townsend won the ladies aggregate arid Mr J. Chisholm the men’s. A vote from all present was taken as to whether to continue the cards or not and it was decided to hold them for anither four evenings, playing flag and progressive 500 on alternative nights.
