BAY OF PLENTY SEAMEN ARE IN KOREAN WATERS
A number of naval ratings from various parts of the Bay of Plenty are serving at the present time in ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy overseas. They include: — Clarence J. Healey, who left Opotiki in July, 1943, to enter the R.N.Z.N. £s a Boy 2nd Class. Fn.m then on until the cessation of hostilities, he was serving almost continuously in sea-going ships of lie R.N.Z.N. After the war he served in shore establishments, but is now an able seaman in H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki, which 'is due to return >o Auckland in mid-November from Korean waters.
Bryan G. Hume, of Whakatane, is also serving in Pukaki in Korean waters as an Able Seaman, Antiaircraft Gunner 3rd Class. He entered the Navy in October, 1946, and has served in the cruiser Eellona and the naval shore establishments Philomel and Tamaki.
Eugene R. Rawson, at present serving as an Able Seaman in Pukaki entered the Navy in September, 1948. He has served for nine months in the cruiser Bellona as well. His home town is Taneatua. Richard Wi Repa, of Opotiki, entered the services as a Stoker, 2r;d Class, in January, 1947. He served in Tamaki and Philomel, and then at sea in Bellona. In 1947, he went to England in Arbutus, and while there, served for a short period in the Aircraft Carrier Indomitable. He returned to New Zealand in the frigate Kaniere, and subsequently served, in Pukaki and the Survey ship Lachlan. He is at present serving in Taupo, which is expected to return to New Zealand on November 26 from the Mediterranean.
Kenneth Barry Barnett, of Te Puke, entered the Navy as an Ordinary Seaman in May, 1947. serving for nine months in Bellona, he was drafted to Taupo, where he was rated Able Seaman. He is still serving in Taupo. Ivan Dennis Angell, of Waihi, entered the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July, 1948. After his initial training, he joined Bellona in May, 1949. He was rated Able Seaman, and is at present serving in Taupo. Eric E. Drabble, joined up from Te Puke in May r 1939, as a Boy 2nd Class. In 1940 he joined Leander, and served in that ship and in Achilles up to December, 1944. He was promoted to Petty Officer in June, 1945. He is now married, and lives at Matata. Petty Officer Drabble has seen service in practically all the New Zealand naval and establishments, and is at present serving in Taupo.
