REST ROOM SAID NOT TO BE IN APPALLING STATE
"The rest room is not in an appalling state. I have inspected it and have made inquiries. There has been vandalism and it cannot be in a perfect state with the class of some people we have but it is not in a bad condition," said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, to the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. The Whakatane County Council forwarded letters from women's organisations on the subject and re fused to subsidise the wages of a full-time attendant. Cr R. G. Buttimore, suggesting a sub-committee to consider the matter, said a complaint was ' that the room was not up-to-date. County residents used it most. "We're a local body not a Chamber of Commerce considering what business comes to the town but a sister local body gives it to us right in the neck," said Cr H. G. Warren. "We have done all we can do," said Mr Barry.
