Farmers' Executive Refers Remit Back To Branch
! A Rangitaiki branch remit asking that the law be amended to prevent trees from being planted less than one chain from telephone lines was referred back to the branch by a meeting of the executive of the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers held at Whakatane. Few members supported the remit. Mr J. Caulfield, Rangitaiki, said that in his area telephone lines had been damaged by falling branches. They had been a definite curse ar.d although some of the owners had trimmed the trees there had still been interference. Mr L. Richardson, Tarr?atua: The law is about 50 years Cit of date. Most of the hedges have been planted. What is the case there?
The chairman, Mr S. A. Wells, said that he thought there was a law governing the planting of trees but apparently there was not.
If he was compelled to cut trees down on his property an orchard he owned would be ruined declared Mr A. C. Youngman, Oropi.
Mr Caulfield said that the remit did not mention trees that were already planted. It was aimed at farmers who were going to plant trees in the future.
There was nothing to prevent the telegraph department from cutting branches back to the boundary said Mr D. Vercoe, Te Puke. Mr Wells said that it seemed a little drastic. It might be of benefit to some and a hardship to others.
Mr I. B. Gow said that such a law would prevent a town like Cambridge from being the beautiful spot it is with three-lined streets. He thought there must be some other solution.
