Engineer Reports To Harbour Board
The construction of a new drain to deal with Apanui and adjacent areas in place of the old drain skirting the back of the Strand has been completed, reported the consulting engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, to the Whakatane Harbour Board on Friday. Owing to the nature of the country encountered below the surface which proved in many cases to be sand, the rate of progress was greatly retarded. The soft nature of the sides of the cut prevented dredging after half tide which caused considerable delay. “The Borough Council are at present putting in the pipe lines which will lead to the floodgates on the northern side of the Strand extension roadway,” he said. “Until this work is finished the roadway will be closed to all traffic.”
