PREPARING TO OPEN EXCHANGE AT MURUPARA

Arrangements are now under way for the official opening of the Murupara Rural Automatic Telephone Exchange oni Saturday, when the Postmaster General, the Hon. W. J. Broadfoot, is to perform the opening ceremony. It is anticipated that this will be a gala day in the district and representatives from the various local bodies have been invited to attend the function in an official capacity. Although the telephone cannot yet be put to its full use, only the party lines operating at the moment, to a district which hitherto has been without this type of a communication even this limited use has been found a great help in the short time that it has been available. The residents of the district are looking forward to the time when they can ring up to Wha T katane or Rotorua from their own homes instead of having to make the 50-mile trip into town or travel the distance to Murupara and there spend literally hours waiting for a toll call to come through.

Arrangements are in the hands of the Murupara branch of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce.
