Whakatane Has Light Rainfall

Rainfall in Whakatane in August was exceptionally light, according to official figures. Tauranga’s total of 5.96 inches fell on 13 days and was an increase on the normal August figure of 1.22 inches. ‘ The heaviest fall of 2.59 inches was recorded on August 18. Whakatane and Opotiki both recorded light falls, the former experiencing 3.82 inches on 12 days and the latter, 2.93 inches on 13 ■days. The heaviest fall at Whakatane was on. August 18—the same day as at Tauranga—when 1.85 inches were recorded. The heaviest fall at Opotiki was recored on August 3 when .84 inches of rain fell.. Mean temperatures in the North Island differed little from the average apart from a slight negative tendency in eastern districts. The .average temperatures at Tauranga, Whakatane and Opotiki were very similar, the figures reading 49.6, 49.2 and 49.1 degrees respectively. Of the three towns the highest temperature on any one day was recorded at Opotiki, with 64.1 degrees on August 29. Whakatane was second with 63.8 degrees on August 24 and Tauranga was third with 63.5 degrees on the same date. Opotiki registered the 1-west minimum temperature of the three towns, with 29.1 degrees on August 11. Tauranga recorded 31.1 degrees on August 1 and Whakatane 31.5 degrees also on August 1.
