No Room At The Concert
Not even standing room was available to latecomers at the Maori concert held in the Winter Show Buildings on Saturday night. The hall was packed with both Maoris and Pakehas.
The parade of haka parties which was to have taken place before the concert, did not take place. At the concert, parties from each tribe offered hakas and action songs based on the traditions of their tribes.
A criticism to be offered is that some of the lesser items were by no means Maori. There is something incongruous about a Maori maiden, in native costume, singing a cheap American song. The truly Maori numbers were of particular high standard but the packed hot conditions of the hall were disturbing to the audience. Organisation seemed to have slipped badly where the general handling of seating was concerned bu even those who could not sit down enjoyed the show.
