Tennis Season Opens At Otakiri; Conditions Ideal

The Otakiri Tennis Club opened their season under ideal conditions on Saturday. Mr G. O. Lord, president of the club, welcomed about 50 members and visitors and declared the season open by asking Miss Doreen Barton, the youngest member, to serve the first ball. The club captains, Mrs Peck and Mr D. Barton, organised a Yankee tournament, the winners being, ladies, Miss Vallance; men, Colin Dodunski. Consolation: Ladies, Miss J. Jessup; men, L. Summerell. A feature of the day was the good form shown by the junior players, obviously the result of sound coach ing by senior members in the season past. Among the visitors was the Bay of Plenty Junior, Miss Margaret Pithie, who recently won the junior section of the Wiseman’s Tournament. Local members were hard pressed to give this promising young player a game she is capable of'' playing.
