WOMEN PROTEST AGAINST REST ROOM CONDITIONS
A protest agaifccat “the continued filthy conditions” of the rest rooms in Whakatane and a solicitation for aid in remedying the position were expressed by the District Co-ordinating Committee (representing Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and Women’s Institutes) in a letter received at a meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday.
It was stated that committee members who had toured both islands had not seen rooms as neglected and-ill-cared for as those at Whakatane, a distinction of which such a prosperous town should be ashamed. The organisation pointed out that it represented many country womell - „ 4.U The town benefited from thcountry visitors and should make provision for them, said Cr Hunter. The rooms were in borough teiritory and had nothing to do with the County Council, said the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett. ... Nevertheless, said Mr D. T. Allan, the borough should be made to realise its responsibilities. It was decided to refer the coi - respondence to the Boiough ounThe Borough Council had asked the County Council to contribute portion of the wages of a full-time attendant. ■ The County Council decided, on. the recommendation of the Finance Committee, to inform the Borough Council that it considered the responsibility for maintenance to be solely that of the Borough Council.
