Driver's Escape When Grader Falls
The driver of a P.W.D. grader, Mr Kurei, had a remarkable escape from injury when the machine he was driving fell 80 feet into the river below.
Mr Kurei was working at a point just beyond Wairata on the Waioeka Gorge road. , He was backing the machine and when he depressed the clutch pedal the clutch did not free and the machine continued to move to the edge of the bank. As it toppled over the side the blade caught for a moment on the edge of the road and in that brief moment Mr Kurei hurled himself from the machine and landed on the road somewhat badly shaken. The machine fell to the riverbed but was fortunately not badly damaged. 7m e r-?b was crushed and a rear wheel practically split in two.
