PENALTIES FOR MEN UNLAWFULLY AT THE HOSPITAL
Unlawful presence at the domestic quarters of the Whakatane Public Hospital without intention to commit other crimes brought prison for one man and fines for three others when they were charged before Mr Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court yesterday.
Frist man charged/was Clifford Marshall, who pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Fuller said tha f at 3 a.m. on July 23, the matron found men prowling round the hospital. Marshall had taken a girl home to the domestic quarters from a dance and she had difficulty in making him leave. The authorities had trouble with men about the hospital, said tne Senior-Sergeant. The practice of men prowling there was too prevalent and it was desired to stop h. Men could not go to the domestic quarters by invitation or otherwise. A fine of £5 was imposed on Marshall. / / John Irimako also pleaded gml-y. The circumstances were similar, said Senior-Sergeant Fuller. A redeeming feature was that Irunako had only gone there with Marshall. He had previous convictions but not for that type of offence. A similar fine was imposed. Kiri Martin, who pleaded guilty, was said to have knocked on a girl’s door and entered her room without invitation. He had two convictions for similar offences. Night prowling seemed to be a habit with him it was said. He was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. About Clement Walker, who also pleaded guilty, it was said that he had been on the premises by invitation but contrary to the hospital rules. He was fined £5 and costs.
