CHAMBER SUPPORT FOR SHOW ASSN. MEMORIAL PLAN
The objective of a Community Centre would not be achieved if the offer of the Winter Show Association to sell its building and donate the proceeds was declined, said Mr H. G. Warren at a meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night. With the County not interested in a borough scheme, all funds must be raised in the town, he said. It was not a secret, said Mr Warren, that the one concert hall in the town was to be re-designed and would have not even its present inadequate staging. The Winter Show Association, he considered, was the biggest community effort in the town. It had supported everything for the public good except music. There was a suggestion that the Asociation was "after a building." That was true but it would be a building not only for the association but for the whole town. The Winter Show Association's building already served that purpose but it was in the wrong part of the town. Mr I. McHarg suggested that the Chamber should not only support the Community Centre proposal but should press for satisfaction as to what form it would take, in particular how it would be directed. Certain advantages would acrue if a Commnnity Centre were associated with the Whakatane High School. The Centre would be vested in the Borough Council. He did not think a full-time director would be warranted, said Mr Warren, but the matter could-be investigated. If the Education Department would pay a director, it would be advisable to follow Mr McHarg's suggestion, said the chairman, Mr B. L. Butler.
Mr McHarg enlarged on the activities of Community Centres which were associated with the Education Department. He appreciated that Whakatane's needs were different, he said. Mr Butler agreed that Whakatane's needs were more on the recreation side than the educative. The Winter Show Association had been misunderstood because it was the only body which had anything substantial to offer, said Mr G. A. Wilkes.
The meeting decided to congratulate the Winter Show Association on its offer.
It was a pity, said the chairman, that some people had the wrong idea of what the Winter Show Association intended.
