Depletion Of Fish In Bay Of Plenty Causes Concern

Concern at the depletion of fish in the Bay of Plenty has been expressed by members of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce. Mr N. Gwillim, who had been asked to supply the chamber with details, said that some netting was taking place just a few hundred yards from the beach.

There was one boat in particular which trawled day and night along the beach and was practically inside the Opotiki bar. Members suggested that air support be asked for to have the practice stopped. It was stated that small fish which had been crushed in the nets were being washed up on the beaches.

After some discussion it was decided to write to the Marine Department at Tauranga on the matter.
