Headed “Diary Note, 1890,” an advertisement in a Wanganui newspaper makes amusing reading at the time of Hamilton’s 86th birthday. The diary note read: “Someone has suggested that we should open a branch at Hamilton. Anyone with any vision can see that this straggling, isolated town has no commercial possibilities. We much prefer Hokitika.”
