SHIELD RUGBY CHALLENGE MAIN GAME TOMORROW

The first Rugby challenge to be withstood by Whakatane since they won the Te Hurinui Apanui Shield from Rotorua a couple of weeks ago will provide the main sporting event at Whakatane tomorrow. Tauvanga has had a strong team in training for several weeks and reports from the western end of the Bay indicate that they' are confident and determined that they will take the trophy home. Whakatane had a final workout together last Sunday but the attendance was not as full as it should have been. However, officials anticipate a good match and a win if Whakatane can repeat its Rotorua performance. Two other fine games have been arranged as curtain raisers tomorrow.

Whakatane juniors will face yet another challenge for the Shalfoon Shield, this time from Tauranga. The early game is a third grade fixture for the Black Shield between Whakatane and Opotiki. Little Rugby has been arranged in the Rangitaiki union. The only game is a junior match at Edgecumbe in the Mclntosh Shield eliminatiaon series between Edgecumbe and Maketu. At Opotiki a strong Rangitaiki B team will be making a bid for the . Moore Shield, now held by Opotiki. Few other sporting fixtures have been arranged at Whakatane. There is only one hockey match and this is to be played at Te Teko tomorrow when the young Huimai women’s team will -defend the Nepia Mona Shield for the fifth challenge, this time from Paroa. Golf will be played at both the Te Teko and Whakatane courses over the weekend. Tomorrow a four-ball best-ball bogey has been arranged at Whakatane while on Sunday Te Teko players will commence the first round of the club championships. Basketball has now finished in the district but two Whakatane teams, Olympics and Paroa, will be competing at the annual Rotorua! tournament, which commences today and concludes tomorrow. '
