Matahina People Will Benefit From First Aid Training

A strong St. John organisation is now being organised at Matahina and is expected to provide valuable first aid service when it is fully established. The movement was started some months ago by Messrs H. B. Moen, J. Love and W. Goodwin, and is connected with the Whakatane Board Mills. When instructional classes were first started there was an attendance of 20 and they were lectured by a lecturer of the Whakatane St. John Association, Mr A. R. Carling. However, when the final examination was made by Dr G. H. Maaka, Whakatane, 17 sat and only two failed.

The first aid training has since proved its worth in a district 27 miles from the nearest doctor. Many minor injuries have been treated but the most successful treatment was to a person who broke a collarbone a few days ago. A member of the Matahina St. John class bandaged the injury and when the injured man was admitted to the Whakatane District Hospital a few hours later hospital staff were pleasantly surprised with the bandaging.

The Matahina unit is still being formed but when it is finally established it should provide a valuable service to this isolated community.
