Eastern Bay Was Outstanding Team At N.Z. Champs
Playing seven games and losing only one the Eastern Bay of Plenty proved one of the outstanding teams in the third grade of the New Zealand Basketball Championships, which concluded at Palmerston North on Saturday. Although they lost their first match against Canterbury Minor the team improved steadily aind their winning scores became larger as the tournament progressed and they ended as run-ners-up in the second third grade section.
The Eastern Bay of P_.ti.ty Association was only formed this year and the team was the first yet sent to a Dominion tournament. Its performance was particularly creditable when it is considered that players had only one practice together before their first game. Memberc of the team were drawn from Whakatane and Opotiki. The party left Palmerston North yesterday and will arrive at Whakatane this morning. The team’s record: —
Tuesday: v Canterbury Minor lost 13-7. Wednesday: v North Otago won 19-9, v South Auckland won 30-7. Thursday: v Waikato Minor won 14-8. Friday: v Te Kawau won 24-9, v Wairarapa won 32-16. Saturday: v Hawkes Bay won 43-7.
