STRONG COMMENT ON FOOD SHOPS IN THE COUNTY
Stringent comment on food premises in the county was made by the health inspector, Mr R. D. Stirling, in his report tabled at a meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday.
“As these premises are very important from a health point I have considered them number one priority,” he said. “With occasional exceptions, I found the food premises to be of a low standard; in the majority of cases this could be rectified by enforcing regulations to bring about structural alterations. The few remaining would be required to adopt a higher standard of personal cleanliness. Defects are too numerous to itemise.
Main defects —in grocer stores are: Lack of sinks and hot water, store rooms - unlined and festooned with cobwebs, the harbouring of rats. In bake-houses they appertain to personal cleanliness. One was found to have numerous maggots on the ceiling of the flour store immediately over the supply hopper. “There is only one butcher shop of reasonable standard in the county; this is at Matata; others require either structural alterations or greater personal cleanliness insisted upon.
“I have insisted on dog notices being displayed in all food premises.”
