A.E.C. Instructor To Lecture In District On Film Appreciation

The Awakeri branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers held their monthly meeting when a very good attendance of members was present, Mrs E. C. Haultain presiding. The services of Miss M. Smith, M.A., of the Adult Education Centre, Auckland, will be available for two lectures on September 22, when lectures on film appreciation and literature, will be given for the benefit of anyone. Letters of appreciation were read from recipients of parcels sent from the branch to people in Britain, and an appeal for voluntary donations was made to enable this worthwhile work to be continued. A brisk discussion took place on the policy to be adopted regarding the future of the branch library consisting of something over- 400 books. In the past the library filled a great need, but as other facilities, particularly the Country Library Service are available, and the replenishment at present would be so costly, it was decided to disband the library, offering the books for sale to members.

A report on the recent Dominion conference was given by Mesdames C.' R. Wilson and Haultain, who attended as branch representatives. It was pointed out to members that during the past year, 2310 weeks were worked by Division housekeepers, thus affording a great measure of relief to country women. The wages paid to housekeepers amounted to £10,531, including a subsidy of £1782 paid by the Government.

An interesting description was given of the international pageant staged by the Division in the Wellington Town Hall to mark the 25th jubilee celebrations of the organisation.
