Children Worst Bicycle Offenders At Whakatane

A check is now being made on all bicycles in the district by inspectors of the Transport Department. Many of the large number of . bicycles at Whakatane, it is considered, are not road worthy and are being ridden when they are a menace on the road. The Department has emphasised that all machines must be properly equipped before they are taken on the road. In addition for night riding they should have an adequate head lamp, rear reflector and white painting on the back mudguard. On a recent Friday night check it was found that most of the bicycles owned by adults were in fairly good order. Those in the worst state were being ridden by children. Some of the machines should not have been on the road, one inspector stated. An appeal is being made to all parents to be certain that any bicycle they allow their children to ride is properly equipped first. This is particularly important as it is considered that children are the worst bicycle offenders at Whakatane.
