Judge Comments On Drama Presentation Of Whakatane W.I.
“Characters in the play were stock types; not people, but characters, and that it made it very hard for the players to get inside the characters they were supposed to represent,” stated the judge, Miss K. Keddel, when commenting on the Whakatane Women’s Institute’s presentation “Shadows in the South” at the North Island Drama League’s festival at Rotorua last week. Almost all the voices were on an upper pitch—they spoke up instead of speaking out, she said. ~ '.‘Shadows in the South” is a comedy drama. Although a high standard was generally maintained, the players seemed to be rather overawed by a sense of responsibility and they were more subdued than when they made their winning effort at the Rotorua festival. The tempo of the play seemed to .be slower, probably on that account. Last week’s festival wa's attended by drama societies from Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Wellington and Manawatu.
