OVER 1,000 BOOKS HANDED OVER TO PRIMARY SCHOOL

A large crowd attended the official handing over of about 1,000 books by the Legion of Frontiersmen to the Whakatane Primary School on Thursday night. The result of an intensive drive of the district the books and a cheque for £2B 17s 6d were gathered by the Legion as a start for a school library. The handing over ceremony was combined with a social and the screening of a fine technicolour film of Whakatane and Ohope beauty spots. Describing the scheme to start the library Frontiersman C. R. Coates

•said that the Legion had received wonderful support for their efforts. He thanked the district for response. Appreciation of the books and the fine thought in providing them was expressed by the headmaster, Mr A. H. Fryer-Raisher. He said the lib-

rary would be of immense value to the school. Similar remarks were _ made by Mr K. Francis, chairman ■Ol ■ the school committee. During, the evening items were given by Messrs W. Tyssen and H. Haeusler while a competition was wnn hv Mr L. Hahn, who was also

responsible for screening Ahe film. A novel incident was the roll call when those present were asked to write their names and the districts in which they attended school in a book. Districts all over New Zealand were represented as well as several from England, one from Canada, another Trieste, two from Vienna, and several other overseas centres.. Strangely enough only two claimed Whakatane for their schooling. A most enjoyable evening concluded with supper, and a few words from the headmaster, setting out the aims of the Parent-Teacher Association.
