WAR MEMORIAL GATE TO FALLEN MAORI SOLDIERS
One of the main parts of the Matatua anniversary celebrations will be the unveiling of a memorial gate to Maori boys from the district, who lost their lives in the last three wars. The planned memorial! .will not be an elaborate structure but it is intended that it will be a suitable and lasting memorial to those who did not return.
A great number of the men who entered the Maori Battalion in World War II came from the Ngatiawa tribes. A large number did not return. Today they are remembered not only by their families but also by most tribes, who have given willingly to this memorial.
The cost of the memorial is about £660 and while it is confidently expected that the cost will be covered sections of the community are being given an opportunity to assist in providing the memorial by the opening of a subscription list. This list is now open and subscriptions may be left at the Beacon Office and will be publicly acknowledged.
