Drama Festival Is Won By The Whakatane W.I.

The Whakatane Women’s Institute with its play “Shadows in the South,” won first place in the annual, festival at Rotorua of the British Drama League, second award going to last night’s opening play, “Cats of Egypt,” presented by Rotorua Women’s Club team. The prize for the best actress went to Mavis Stokes, of the cast of the ( winning team. Of “Shadows of the South,” the > judge, Miss Beatrice McKenzie, Auckland, said that the cast had shown the greatest evenness and no part was weak. There was the right balance of character and the right relation between the parts. The slightly prolonged climax had been well sustained. “We enjoyed this play very much indeed,” said Miss McKenzie of “In These Hard Times,” presented by the Richmond Players of Matata. However it lasted only 20 minutes and had a very small cast. The Mrs Hopkins of Vera Henry was authentic and lively.
