FEW SPORTING EVENTS IN BAY OVER WEEK-END
Apart from basketball competitions on the Domain Courts and a seven-a-side junior hockey tournament at Edgecumbe there will be few-, sporting,, fixtures in the Whakatane and Rangitaiki districts over the week-end. The usual hockey competitions will be continued on Sunday but there are no other organised sporting events. Nearly all Rugby sub-unions in the Bay of Plenty have cancelled their weekly competitions -tomorrow to enable players to attend the final Rugby test at Auckland. Those who do not go have signified that they will be remaining at home beside their radio sets anyway. Probably the only Rugby fixture tomorrow will be at Waimana where Opotiki District High School is to play a home team. In preparation for the main tournament of the year at Rotorua in September the Whakatane basketball competitions will be continued tomorrow. Several good games are expected, the main one being at 2 p.m. when the two senior leaders, Paroa A and Olympics, will meet to decide who is going to take the lead. Hockey will be played on Sunday but apart from the junior tournament at Edgecumbe the Central Bay of Plenty senior men’s and women’s teams will be travelling to Te Awamutu to play Waipa. No Rugby league fixtures will be played in the Bay of Plenty district during the week-end. The senior A and B teams from Ruatoki are playing friendly matches against Rotorua at Rotorua.
