DAIRY FARMERS AT RUATOKI TO CART MILK TO FACTORY

Ruatoki farmers are still going to transport milk to the Ruatoki Dairy Factory themselves. This was decided at a meeting of suppliers and directors of the Opouriao Dairy Company called to discuss the transportation of milk to the factory either by trucks or milk road tanker.

Each suggestion was fully discussed and the tanker idea had to be scrapped as bridges in the Ruatoki district are not strong enough to support them. Two offers by cartage contractors were considered. Such a service under contract would cost Ruatoki suppliers £1292 per annum, approximately 2id per lb butterfat, it was stated. As this price did not include the cartage of whey suppliers were reluctant to accept this method of transport. Another objection was that suppliers would still have to cart their milk from their farms to certain dumps on the roads. It was felt that most farmers would prefer to cart their own milk.
