Miss Cara Hall Delights A Large Whakatane Audience

Playing with a touch rarely seen in the Bay of Plenty Miss Cara Hall, well known New Zealand pianist, delighted a large crowd at the Whakatane High School on Wednesday night in a two-hour recital. Arranged by the Community Arts Centre the recital attracted many music lovers, who were treated* to an exhibition by an obvious mistress of the keyboard. Miss Hall explained several pieces as she proceeded with her recital and set the audience at ease immediately with her charming and totally unaffected manner. Obviously delighting in the strains that flowed from her touch of the keys Mists Hall’s love for fine m’usic soon made itself felt, not only in her playing, but also in her expression of apparent enchantment. To a number of people who glanced first at their programmes some of the compositions listed, La puerta del vino and Feux d’artifice by Debussy and Chopin’s Etudes (Op. 25, No. 1), must have seemed a little imposing and perhaps, a little deep, but it was not so when explained by Miss Hall. It was easier to appreciate this music when the pianist explained the significance of a selection here and a few notes somewhere else. Th French composers are very patriotic and Miss Hall showed their expression of love of country in the few bars of' the La Marseillaise they managed to include in their works. Miss Hall included in her propramme selections from Bach. Mozart and Brahms while the French school was represented by Ravel and Debussy. She played three compositions by Chopin.
