J. B. Smith Out J. B. Smith will not be playing for New Zealand Maoris against Manawatu tomorrow or against the British Isles on Wednesday. The shoulder that he dislocated in the Northland match last week is still sore, and Smith will not be fit. He was to have captained the Maori team.
Blind Institute Band The Blind Institute Band, which is to give a concert in the Grand Theatre on Monday evening, is to arrive at Whakatane about noon or: Monday. Those people who will be billeting members of the band are asked to meet the party outside the theatre at noon to take the guests to their holies.
Still No Radiators
The recent appeal of the electricity controller for less use of radiators is of little interest to Whakatane as heaters are prohibited in the borough and have been so for a number of years. Even yvith the individual quota system, which is now being introduced, radiators will still not be permitted. Most people should have their quotas by next week.
Liberation of Trout Bay of Plenty anglers should not be short of any trout during the next fishing season if the several thousand fry expected in the district on Monday survive the rigours of river life. The Department of Internal Affairs has plans to liberate a large quantity in the Waimana River on Monday. This is part of their annual liberation of the fish in Bay of Plenty rivers.
Some Place To Live Accommodation is still required by the Whakatane Library Committee before the public library may reopen again. A new librarian has already been appointed but before she can take up her duties she must have a place to live, either a flat or a house. There is still- much to be done resorting and cataloguing books and this can only be done by a qualified librarian. Many new books have been added to the original collection in the library.
Worthy Concert * A treat is in store for the public of Whakatane in the concert to be presented in the Grand Theatre on Monday night July 31. An interesting variety programme of band and dance music, vocal and instru - mental . solos is to be presented. The programme has been enthusiastically received by audiences in other provincial centres and smaller towns throughout the Dominion. All the artists are either totally or partially blind, and for this reason, alone. the concert is deserving of every support.—P.B.A. v Oil From Eels
Although regarded as something of a delicacy in Britain and other parts of the world, and by a minority of New Zealanders, eels have previously not had a commercial value in this country. Now, however, an Invercargill man thinks he may have found a way to turn the myriads of eels in New Zealand creeks and rivers into revenue. He had discovered a process to extract oil from eels and a report on a sample sent to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Wellington states that it would be suitable for paints and, perhaps, as a neatsfoot oil in the- leather and wool industries. The department has advised the man to continue with his experiments. He is keeping his process of extracting the oil a secret.
