Gaol Sentences Reduced To Fines
A reduction in sentences from one month’s goal to a fine of £lO, costs 13s, each on three Paroa labourers was granted by Messrs C. H Brebner and H. G. Warren, J’s. P., in the Whakatane Police Court on Wednesday. The accused, Whainoa Himeona, Hira Tawa and Kiri Wana, were charged with being on the premises of the Whakatane District Hospital without lawful excuse and were granted a rehearing on the ground that they were not represented by counsel and were unable to present their side of the case because of nervousness.
Appearing for the accused Mr Barry said that each had accompanied members of the hospital staff to a dance and had accompanied them back to the hospital afterwards.
