Two New £4OO Maori Scholarships To Be Awarded Annually

Two new scholarships are to be issued each year, one to a boy and the other to a girl, under the Ngarimu Trust Scholarship Fund. The fund was set up in commemoration of Lieutenant Ngarimu, V.C., who lost 'his life overseas with the Maori Battalion. The capital sum held was obtained largely by contributions from the Maori people, and it is expected that the interest from the fund will amount to £IOOO a year. The scholarships are worth £IOO each per annum and cover four post-primary years at any school.

As a result of the decision to issue two new scholarships each year, eight scholarships would be operative concurrently after the fourth year. So far four have been awarded, but the Maori people appear not to be fully aware of the opportunity which is offered. Applications will shortly be called for in the Education Gazette and each student possessing any degree of Maori blood may make application. The choice is made on a competitive basis, both by academic examination and by personal interview by the inspector of Maori schools.
