Rowing Club Will Not Be Attending Canterbury Games

It is not expected that the Whakatane Rowing Club will be contesting any of the 12 races to be conducted by the Canterbury Rowing Association at the Canterbury Centennial Games early next year. The high cost of sending crews and transporting boats is the main obstacle. To send four crews from Whakatane would cost about £2OO.

Rregret has been expressed in some quarters that the club will not be represented as it is believed by coaches that the club could produce three crews, who would be among the top placings. *

Prize money recommended for the regatta totals £609. Crews from New Zealand, Australia and the United States will be participating. The prize money:—

Invitation eight-oar, one mile and a half, £IOO, £25, £lO. Open fouroar, mile, £7O, £2O, £lO. Coxswainless double sculls, mile and a quarter, £3O, £lO. Coxswainless pair-oar, mile and a quarter, £3O, £lO. Coxswainless single sculls, mile and a quarter, £25, £lO. Junior four-oar, mile, £25, £B, £3. Junior double sculls, mile, £ls, £5, £2. Maiden eight-oar, mile and a quarter, £35, £lO, £4. Maiden four-oar, mile, £25, £B, £9. Youths' eight-oar, mile and a quarter, £35, £lO, £4. Lightweight maiden four-oar, £2O, £B, £3.
