How To Control Buttercup & Pennyroyal

(By E. R. Marryatt, Fields Instructor, Dept. of Agriculture, Whakatane) Farmers troubled with buttercup and pennyroyal may now control both weeds by a single application of hormone-type weed killer provided they go about it the right way. One-half pound of 2, 4-D per acre will give a satisfactory kill of buttercup and lib will do the same for pennyroyal. Spraying should be done in September, October of November. The Sodium Salt and the Ethyl Ester appear to be equally effective for the control of both weeds. Pennyroyal becomes increasingly resistant as it approaches flowering. White clover is less affected and recovery is quicker if the spraying is done in SeptemberOctober rather than in OctoberNovember.

Spray as early as possible before the pastures become smothered by buttercup. This also helps pastures to close up better than after later spraying. Spraying is not essential. One pound of Frenokone mixed with sufficient lijme or ordinary topdressing fertiliser to cover an acre will control buttercup if done at the proper time.
