High Standard Of Play At Indoor Bowling Tourney

Twelve teams competed in the first evenings play of a four-week indoor bowling tournament sponsored by the Whakatane St. John Ambulance Association on Saturday evening. Play was of a high standard, with Legion of Frontiersmen No. 1 and Whakatane St John D teams, * the section winners, deserving praise, as they are both young teams who have never before competed in a tournament. During supper Mr F. Bush presented the Superintendent of the Whakatane St John, Mr E. Ramson, with a shield given by Mr A. W. Mcintosh and himself, for competition between indoor bowling clubs of the district. The shield, which is to be known as the Whakatane St John Challenge Shield, has created much interest, and challenges are already being issued. Detailed results of play:— Round 1: Section 1: Board Mills St John defeated Taneatua 1.0.0. F. No. 3, Legion of Frontiersmen No. 1 defeated Whakatane Nursing Division B, Whakatane Druids W defeated Thornton 1.8. C. No. 4. Section 2: Matahina St John No. 1 defeated Taneatua 1.0.0. F. No. 2, Thornton 1.8. C. No. 5 defeated Legion of Frontiersmen No. 2, Whakatane St John D defeated Whakatane Druids Z.

Section No. 1 was won by the Legion of Frontiersmen team No. 1, and No. 2 Section by Whakatane St John D, who tied with Thornton 1.8. C. No. 5, and had to meet in a deciding game at the end of play.
