SEVEN WHAKATANE PLAYERS IN BAY TEAM

Seven Whakatane players were chosen for the Eastern Bay of Plenty basketball team to compete in the Dominion Championships to be held at Palmerston North next month, following representative trials between Whakatane and Opotiki at Opotiki on Saturday. Most of the players are well experienced and the Whakatane contingent is particularly strong. This will be the first time the Eastern Bay will be represented in the championships. The team is expected to be away a week and will travel by bus and train. The party will gather at Whakatane on August 19 and leave the following day. It will return on August 27 and is expected to arrive back at Whakatane on August 28 about 10 a.m. The team will, play senior B. The full team:

Forwards: H. Amoamo, N. Rewharewha (Opotiki), W. Keepa, E. Ranapia (Whakatane). Centres: Y. Black (Opotiki, captain), E. Quigg, B. Grant, N. Kelly. (Whakatane). Defence: J. Ratene, S. Ngaropo (vice-captain, Whakatane), R. Walker, I. Peters (Opotiki). ' Mrs Calvert, Opotiki, and Miss Syverston. Whakatane, will travel with the team as manageresses and delegates to the New Zealand Council meeting, which, is to be held just before the championships. WHAKATANE HAS WIN OVER OPOTIKI

Displaying a stronger defence, Which kept the home team’s score down considerably, Whakatane defeated Opotiki by 14 goals to 7 in a representative basketball match played at Opotiki on Saturday. The game was used as a trial to enable selectors to choose an Eastern Bay of Plenty team to compete in the New Zealand Championships. It was a fast match with some good play and although both teams were strong on attack Whakatane appeared more sure. A gusty wind upset the scoring and caused considerable difficulty for the goalies.
