Did Whakatane Take Rugby Match Away From Tauranga?
Officers of the Tauranga Rugby Sub-Union have still not got over that awarding of the Bay of PlentyAustralia game to Whakatane last year. Although they have at various times admitted that arrangements for the match could not be faulted they still consider that Tauranga was the venue, despite statements to the contrary by the Bay Union and the upholding of the Bay Union’s decision by the New Zealand Union.
When commenting on the North Auckland-Bay of Plenty match at a meeting last week one member of the Tauranga Union, Mr G. H. Fisher, said that sinc.e the Australian game had been taken away from Tauranga he had been awaiting a chance for Tauranga to prove itself. The handling of the game had been accomplished without a hitch and was a feat of which they could be proud.
They certainly attracted a large crowd, estimated at 4500. Gate takings totalled £397 4s, which is thought to be one of the largest yet taken in the Bay of Plenty.
