MATATA BOXER WINS MAIN BOUT OF LOCAL TOURNEY

Forcing the fight all the way and piling up points in the early rounds B. Caverhill (11.7£) Matata, defeated E. Rudolph (11.8) Auckland, on points in the main bout, a middleweight contest, at the Whakatane Boxing Association’s first tournament of the year on Saturday night. Caverhill made no mistake in chasing his opponent and landed heavily. Rudolph displayed some quick footwork, which got him out of trouble on a number of occasions. The tournament was attended by a large crowd, who saw some top class boxing. Generally however, some of the bouts were below the standard of previous tournaments. The referees were Messrs A. Hogg and K. Shaw, Whakatane. The judges were Messrs E. Nicol and E. Reeves (Taneatua), the announcer, Mr F. Cameron, Whakatane, and the timekeepers Messrs H. G. Warren and P. Armstrong, Whakatane. Leading equally as well with either hand D. O’Connell (8.7) Auckland, defeated I. McKenzie (8.3) Whakatane, over four rounds in the main bantam weight contest of the tournament. McKenzie displayed some neat footwork but the Auckland boy threw more punches to good effect. The first bout, a midget weight of three rounds, provided a fine curtain raiser. There was some hard punching and plenty of action but C. Davis (5.11) Auckland, had the edge on J. Harland (5.12) Whakatane, to win on points. Boring in repeatedly and using a hard left at every opportunity, A. McFarland (8.11) Mount Maunganui took a narrow decision over F. Fluery (7.11) Mangakino, in a flyweight bout. Fluery covered well but McFarland scored often?

G. Neville (11.0) Whakatane, was game but A. Dunsmuir (10.13) Matata, had too many tricks and the Whakatane boy failed to last the second round in a middleweight contest.

Hard hitting by H. McDonald (11.0) Auckland, a clever fighter, gave him a knockout over E. Smith (11.9) Mangakino, in the second round of a middleweight bout. He punched hard with either hand. An advantage of height gave R. Farant (10.6) Auckland, a technical knockout in the second round at a welter-weight contest over J. Griffin (9.11 A) Matata. Griffin took the fight to Farant, who made no mistake with his punches to the head. In one of the best- bouts of the evening, a paper-weight, J. Butcher (6.12) Whakatane, had a popular win over W. Rogan (6.10) Auckland, on points. Butcher took the fight to Rogan and scored well repeatedly. There was plenty of action, footwork only, in a light-weight contest, when A. Raymond (9.5-1) Mount Maunganui, beat D. Keepa (9.5) Matata, on points in the second round. Few punches were landed by either fighter but Raymond had the majority after the referee had warned them a couple of times to commence fighting. With both fighting willingly B. Horton (5.21) Auckland, took a narrow decision over B. Scotson (5.61) Mangakino, in a midgetweight bout. Both judges disagreed the referee giving his decision. M. Raureti (7.13) Matata, took the fight all the way to J. Wilson (7.5) Mangakino, before the referee stopped the fly-'weight bout in the last round, giving Raureti the decision. Wilson landed some heavy punches. There was some hard punching on either side when F. Johnistone (12.31) Auckland, beat H. Ratima (12.3) Auckland, narrowly on points in a light heavy-weight contest.

Scottish Champion To Meet Mullet

It was announced during the evening that he may soon be meeting Don Mallet for the New Zealand heavyweight championship.
