QUOTA SYSTEM OF SAVING POWER TO BE STARTED SOON
Individual quota saving of power is to be brought into operation at Whakatane as soon, as possible. At the same time efforts are to be made to lift the present blackout periods immediately. This was decided by Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. A committee consisting of the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, the town clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, and the chairman of the Finance Committee, Cr C. S. Armstrong, was set up to bring in the quota system immediately. Explaining the power position the Mayor told the Council that the electricity controller had said to go ahead and bring in an individual quota system in the borough. He had promised enough power to put Whakatane on the same basis as other centres now operating the quota system. The quota will be based on the number of inmates in each house and the essential) electrical appliances. After the quotas have been allocated there will still be a right of appeal for extra power. Mr Barry pointed out that even though individual quotas would do away with cuts consumers would still have to save.
The quota committee is to confer with the engineer of the Bay of Plenty Power Board today.
