Price Of Tea Up To 9s A Pound?
Whispers that the price of tea Would be going up at the end of the month to round about 9s a lb were made by a traveller at Whakatane over the week-end. Despite these dark prophecies inquiries at Whakatane yesterday did not suggest that any rise was imminent. A message from Australia this
week which anounced an increase in the Australian price following the subsidy cut quoted the New /Zealand retail price as 5s 5d a lb., but this, the Master Grocers’ Association points r out, is less than the
Wholesale figure. The wholesale prices of popular brands range from 5s 6|d to 5s lOd a lb and the tea is retailed at from 6s to 6s 4d. Some other brands can be bought for 5s 10£d.
