Berkshires Attract Well At Annual Pig Sale

The offering was of a very high standard with all animals in excellent condition at the annual pig sale of the Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co. held at Tauranga. The .pedigree Berkshire pigs were a very attractive line and competition for these were steady throughout. The large black breeding sows and boars also met a steady sale. A smaller number of Tamworths and Large Whites were catalogued and these created very keen competition. The entry of grade breeding sows was of the usual high quality and competition was extra keen, especially for sows close to farrowing. The top price of £3l was paid for a Tamworth-Berkshire cross sow.

The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co. Ltd. report on their fortnightly pig sale held at Edgecumbe last week. A medium entry of all classes of pigs were penned. Due to the railway line being blocked export firms were not so keen, but local buyers for fat pigs kept the bacon and pork up to value. Store and weaner pigs eased slightly on recent high rates. Quotations: Choppers, £5 5s to £6; medium bacon to £7 Is; light bacon, £5 19s to £6 2s 6d; heavy pork and large feeders, £4 18s to £5 19s; medium pork, £4 to £4 12s; light pork, £3 5s to £3 15s; good store pigs, £3 5s 6d to £3 18s; slips and spaall stores, £2 15s to £3 2s; other slips, £2 5s to £2 12s; good weaners, 36s to £2; other weaners, 10s to 255.
