Basketball
WHAKATANE TO PLAY OPOTIKI Although a number of players were not available a strong team was selected in basketball trials on Saturday to represent Whakatane against Opotiki at Opotiki next Saturday. The game will be a trial to select a team to represent the Eastern Bay of Plenty at the Dominion Championships at Palmerston North next month. Some good basketball was seen in Saturday’s trials and it is considered that Whakatane should be strongly represented in the Eastern Bay team. The Whakatane team:—
Defence, J. Armstrong, S. Ngaropo (Olympics); J. Ratene (Paroa); centre, E. Quigg (Olympics), N. Kelly (Poroporo), B. Grant (Paroa); goal, M. Ratahi, W. Keepa (Paroa) A. McWilliams (Olympics), E. Ranapia (High School).
HIGH SCHOOL A TUSSLE WITH OLYMPICS
Playing their first game in the senior grade High School A made it a strong tussle when they were defeated by more experienced Olympics 20-4 in the Whakatane basketball competitions on Saturday. Without the services of their regular goalie School missed a number of easy goals, which kept the score down considerably. The polished Olympics field work was a strong feature to counter but School went better than the score would indicate. Full results:—
Olympics 20 v High School A 4, Paroa B 23 v Tanetaua 13, Taneatua 18 v Redwings 8, Paroa B 18 v High School B 11, St. Joseph’s 22 v Primary B 0, Primary A 16 v Primary B 3, Paroa A 28 v Paroa 14.
